Manchester City is going through a tough moment, with a record of matches lost in a row.

Is that something unexpected?

Maybe.

Is it new in the industry?

Definitely not, only for Guardiola (!)

Why?
Well, to start he’s brilliant. But, as he said, he was always very lucky with the players he coached.

Let’s dive into that.

In modern Football, individual talent often proves crucial, sometimes even surpassing the impact of tactics or coaching.

Is it too bold to state this, coming from a Coaching background?

Perhaps.

“(…) I was also very lucky to train astounding players at my clubs.

I do not know if I am exceptional.”

Pep Guardiola

Even so, Pep Guardiola frequently emphasizes this, acknowledging that elite players elevate any tactical system with their unique abilities.

More over, this perspective isn’t unique to Guardiola but widely recognized across the industry.

Having players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, De Bruyne, or Haaland allows teams to solve complex game situations, break down tight defenses, and convert opportunities that tactics alone might not yield.

Can we assume this as a fact?

Do you know when you say to your friends “this Coach has a shinning star always sparking in his favor” when the team has the ability to win matches and solve situations in difficult (or less prone) scenarios ?

Well, in my opinion, when it comes to more than once event, there’s definitely a central element of individual talent attached to it.

The talent vs. tactics debate points to how top players can adapt to and even transcend tactical frameworks.

Talented players possess an innate creativity and technical prowess, enabling them to read and react to the game in ways a coach might not have anticipated.

Their presence often dictates how a team is structured; managers may build strategies around star players to maximize their strengths.

For example, Real Madrid’s reliance on players like Mbappé or Vinícius Jr. has often allowed them to exploit individual brilliance in high-stakes moments. Before, it was Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo Fenomeno and others.

Just as Pep Guardiola mentioned several times when spoke about his times at FC Barcelona, with the likes of Alves, Pique, Puyol, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta and, mainly, Lionel Messi.

“At this level, I don’t think there’s a lot of difference between the best quality and the next level. The character makes the big jump”
Ange Postecoglou

As a consequence of this, across the industry, clubs invest heavily in Scouting and Youth Development to secure high-caliber players who can carry a game.

Although a well-drilled system and coaching are vital, individual talent remains the game-changer that defines top-level football allowing teams to compete at the highest levels and produce magical moments that tactics alone cannot orchestrate.

Additionally, I would add, just as Ange Postecoglou (Head Coach, Tottenham Hotspurs) stated, that the character also makes a big difference when dealing with a group of players.

Therefore, if you’re at top level, be wise when selecting the players that can give you an edge in competition making sure the core elements are there for the team.

If you’re, not, as the majority, make sure you nurture talent in the right direction and learn how to deal with a lot of individual frustrations for not achieving their dreams, less talented players (perhaps) and, probably, more volatile performances.

Finally, if you’re an Academy, your impact can be greater towards the power of talent, work and character together.

Don’t let them miss it.
