Not a big headline.
Not a dramatic moment.
Not something that will appear in the news.
I got into the trap of merging a difficult personal period with having too many things to do, too many thoughts and plans, too many Games happening in the same weekend, too many Friendlies to add, too many Bookings to manage, teams growing and developing, the Club is becoming bigger, making sure all is aligned and ready to provide the best Experience to all our Players and families.
And, that turned out to be a very unfortunate mistake.
Just a mistake.
But, like every mistake, it came with that uncomfortable feeling and the small voice inside your head asking:
. “How did this happen?”
. “Could I have done it differently?”
. “What will this cost?”
. “Will I lose my job, my reputation?”
. “Am I good enough?”
In these moments, the unquietly truth comes to mind – “I’m NOT Perfect!”
Yes, we all know – mistakes are part of the journey.
But that doesn’t mean they are easy to accept.
In Football, in Business, in Leadership, in Life, we are constantly chasing Precision, Perfection.
Better Decisions.
Better Structures.
Better Timing.
Better Outcomes.
And yet, despite all the Planning, all the Experience, all the Knowledge, we still make mistakes.
Because we are not machines.
We are NOT perfect.
And we never will be.
The real problem is not the mistake itself.
The real problem is What we do after it.
Some people deny it.
Some people hide it.
Some people look for excuses.
Some people look for someone to blame.
But progress never starts with excuses.
Progress starts with Ownership.
“I made a mistake.”
Three simple words.
But incredibly Powerful.
Because the Moment you say them, you regain Control of the situation.
First, every mistake has a Cause.
And if we don’t Understand the Cause, we are only dealing with the symptom.
What is the Context? Was it a bad decision? A lack of preparation? Poor communication? Wrong priorities? Wrong timing?
Or simply a moment of distraction?
Mistakes are rarely random.
They are usually the Result of a Process.
And Processes can always be improved.
That’s why the first step after any mistake is not punishment, it’s Analysis.
Understand the root, not the emotion, so that you can build a better Structure for the Future.
The Second step is Acceptance.
We are not Perfect.
Our Teams are not Perfect.
Our organizations are not Perfect.
And Perfection is not the Goal.
Progress is the Goal!
High-Performing Environments are not built on the illusion of Perfection.
They are built on the capacity to Improve constantly, by Recognizing mistakes, correcting them and evolve.
Think about mistakes as Feedback. Sometimes, they’re expensive, or uncomfortable Feedbacks.
But feedback, nonetheless.
And Feedback is the Foundation of Improvement.
Once the Cause is clear (Analysis) and the mistake is Accepted, comes the most important part: Change.
More questions, as:
. What needs to be adjusted? The Process? The Communication? The Structure?
. Is it the Expectations? Mine? Or others?
. Is it me? Or the people involved?
. Was the Timing?
. The priorities?
If nothing Changes after a mistake, then the mistake was wasted Energy.
And wasted mistakes are Dangerous, because they tend to repeat themselves.
But Change alone is not enough.
You must monitor.
You must re-evaluate.
You must check if the Adjustment is working.
After a few weeks…
After a few months…
Ask the same question again: Are we better now?
If needed, adjust again.
Make the Processes clear:
. Refine.
. Correct.
. Simplify.
. Rebuild.
Because Improvement is never a single step.
It is a continuous Process.
Just like in any Business, or Game Model – it doesn’t STOP!
Mistakes are not the opposite of Success.
They are part of it, and arguably the most important part of it.
Because they force one to THINK twice, analyze, rethink priorities or ways of doing things – IMPROVE!
Without mistakes, we would think we’re invincible or flawless.
The Difference between strong Environments and weak ones is simple:
If at weak Environments mistakes are regularly hidden purposely, strong Environments learn from them.
Whereas at weak Environments the same errors are repeated, strong Environments evolve.
Weak Environments protect egos, whereas strong Environments protect the Mission.
Hence, YES, I made a mistake!
But that is not the end of the story.
Understand the cause.
Accept imperfection.
Make the necessary changes.
Monitor the results.
Adjust again if needed.
But above all:
Always progress.
Life goes on, and I’m standing here, ready to fight again!
