Offer is here. What now? Take it or not?
Many of us have already been in situations where we just feel that we can go into any team and have an immediate impact ? Or maybe desperate to get a job that can sustain us and the family ? Or even, just feel that all we need is an opportunity to show our abilities, regardless the level of entry ?
Of course, there are different motivations for each one of us and one must accept theirs and live with the consequences of each action.
However, this text is to provide an insight over one theme that clearly took a long time of my thought throughout the years, as I crossed what, in my opinion, are many good and bad examples over the years.
“Imagine you get an invitation to be the Head Coach of Liverpoll next Season, you would accept it?”
As a Coach, the decision to accept an offer from a club is a weighty one, laden with both professional and personal considerations. It’s not just about the prestige of the Club or the size of the paycheck – it’s about finding the right fit, both for the team and for yourself. Let’s fly into the factors to consider and the emotions involved in making this pivotal decision, blending scientific insights with a personal touch. Naturally, we need to consider these big themes and understand if all is (or has potentially ways to be) aligned with the Coaches perspective on:
- History and Context (clear idea of both the Club and the Team/League);
- Vision, Philosophy and Objectives;
- Existent Infrastructure and Resources (from fields, Departments, Staff, Timings, etc);
- Extensive Analysis on Previous Coaches;
- Personal impact.
First and foremost, a Coach must consider the club’s Vision and Philosophy. Is their Playing Style aligned with your own Coaching Philosophy? Do they prioritize Youth Development, or are they solely focused on short-term success?
What about you?
Do you consider this important, or at what stage this becomes important?
It’s essential to ensure that your Values and ambitions align with those of the Club to foster a harmonious working relationship.
Additionally, consider the Club’s infrastructure and resources. Do they have the facilities and support staff necessary to facilitate success? Are you allowed to bring in someone with you? Get a team of staff? Is there stability in the ownership and management structure? These factors can significantly impact your ability to implement your coaching vision and achieve your goals.
Furthermore, don’t overlook the importance of the local community and fan base. Are they passionate and supportive, or are they quick to turn on the team in times of adversity? Building a positive rapport with the fans can enhance morale and create a sense of unity that transcends wins and losses.
On a personal level, consider the impact of the move on yourself and your loved ones. Will you be uprooting your family? Is the location conducive to your lifestyle and well-being? It’s crucial to strike a balance between professional aspirations and personal fulfillment to ensure long-term happiness and success.
Now, the one that strikes me more is related with the analysis of the recent Coaches. Ok, fairly speaking, you may have an idea on this when you understand the History and Context. However, I would reinforce the need to really get an extensive analysis on the previous Coaches/Technical Staff, from their Methodologies, Game Plan, Game Model, Strategies in all Moments of the Game. Everything. And their impact on the human relationships established with the group of players, with the other people involving the Team and (very important) with the fans. This, for me, it’s crucial when analyzing if you should accept an offer, or not.
Imagine you get an invitation to be the Head Coach of Liverpoll next Season, you would accept it? Now, lets imagine you have the chance to be the Head Coach Bayern Munchen in June 2024, or Barcelona, what would be your decision?
Would you say: Yes or no?
What would be your thinking process?
Let me know, I’m very curious!
In the end, the decision to accept a Club offer is a deeply personal one, guided by a complex interplay of factors both Professional and Personal. By weighing the Club’s Vision, Resources, and Community support alongside your own values and well-being, you can make an informed decision that sets the stage for a successful and fulfilling Coaching journey. Trust your instincts, listen to your heart, and remember that the greatest victories often stem from the courage to take calculated risks in pursuit of your dreams.
Looking forward to hear from you!
Thank you again,
See you soon.
